HUMAN RIGHTS TORCH RELAY
VANCOUVER ART GALLERY
12pm to 5pm
|
|
CSFDarfur invites you to Join Rally and Walk for Human Rights in China"Global Human Rights Torch Relay" - May 25th
The Human Rights Torch Relay strongly condemns the Chinese regime's ruthless crackdown in Tibet; the underwriting of genocide in Darfur; the ongoing persecution of Falun Gong and arrest of nearly 2,000 followers since January 1; its support of corrupt regimes in Burma, N. Korea and Zimbabwe; and persecution of Christians, lawyers, reporters and all who have become 'prisoners of the Olympics' as a consequence of China's pre-Olympic whitewash
Hosting the Olympics is an honour few nations are granted. Most recently, China has been awarded the honour of hosting the 2008 Summer Olympics-on the basis of its promise to improve its horrific human rights record ahead of the Games
However, according to Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, Freedom House and the UN, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has increased its human rights
abuses considerably, through rampant political oppression, mass executions, forced abortions, mass murder to facilitate illicit organ harvesting, and brutal religious persecution
In light of this, the Coalition to Investigate the Persecution of Falun Gong(CIPFG) initiated the Human Rights Torch Relay (HRTR), a year-long international effort to beam the spotlight on the CCP's human rights violations. The relay, which will travel to 37 countries and 150 cities,
will consist of concerned individuals, church leaders, government officials, civic and professional groups, as well as non-profit organizations that are
committed to universal human rights
Through a variety of grassroots events, the HRTR group will speak out against China's dismal rights record including the persecution and organ harvesting targeting Falun Gong practitioners-considered by many human rights organizations to be enduring the most widespread and brutal persecution in China today-along with the atrocities committed against underground Christians, the Uyghurs, Tibetan Buddhists, democracy advocates, human rights supporters, reporters, lawyers and dissidents. This is also an opportunity to expose the Communist Party's support of rogue regimes perpetrating horrific slaughter upon their citizens, including Darfur, Burma, Zimbabwe and North Korea
To date Beijing has failed to live up to the principles stated in the Olympic Charter: "Olympism seeks to create a way of life based on ... respect for universal fundamental ethical principles ... with a view to promoting a peaceful
society concerned with the preservation of human dignity."... "Any form of discrimination with regard to a country or a person on grounds of race, religion, politics, gender or otherwise is incompatible with belonging to
the Olympic Movement"
The Human Rights Torch relay, which began in Athens last August has been well received by citizens, athletes and celebrities of 26 countries and 80 cities. The torch is expected to arrive in Vancouver on May 25. Our torch receiving ceremony will include a walk with the symbolic torch, welcoming events with speakers, live music, petition campaigns, displays, press conferences, and interview opportunities
We would like to extend an invitation to you and your friends to participate in this historical event on May 25th starting at 12 pm at the Art Gallery in downtown Vancouver. Government officials, celebrities, athletes, human rights
advocates and others will deliver messages emphasizing their stand for human rights and the Olympic Spirit. If possible, please confirm your participation at relay@humanrightstorch.org
With our combined efforts, perhaps we can bring the true Olympic spirit to the Chinese people

Canadian Student For Darfur and Carleton Human Rights Society present: "Stories from the Ground-Darfur
We have heard the numbers: 400,000 dead, 2.5 million displaced, 4.5 million dependent on aid.
We have even seen the images: villages pillaged and razed to the ground, men, women and children driven into refugee camps, the victims of mass violence, destruction and rape...and we are still standing by...waiting for something.
Yet, every voiceless victim is a man, woman and child with a name and a
story - surviving in a hell that transcends numbers or even images.
Words are inadequate...but we'll try:
Come hear a panel of those who have seen and experienced ground zero:
Glen Pearson: a Liberal MP, with experience on the ground and a story of
his own
Mohamed Elfaki: Hamilton Darfur Association

Day for Darfur-Ottawa
Parliament Hill
September 17, 2007
12 pm
|
|
We have reached a critical moment in Darfur.
The un security council recently passed resolution 1769 which
authorized the deployment of a desperately-needed peacekeeping
force. While this is a welcome and important action, nothing has
changed on the ground in Darfur.
On this 4th global day for darfur, events are being planned all over
from the usa to Sierra Leone, with one simple yet powerful action
uniting them, the wearing of blindfolds by participants to visually
communicate our message, Don't Look Away Now: Protect
the People of Darfur.
On September 17th join us on Parliament Hill in Ottawa where we will distribute blindfolds and
ask that participants stand blindfolded in a human chain around Parliament for two minutes.
These two minutes are intended to commemorate the two-year anniversary of the signing
by un member states of the Responsibility to Protect doctrine (r2p). This doctrine states that
sovereign countries have a responsibility to protect their own citizens from avoidable
catastrophe,
from mass murder and rape, from starvation,
but when they are unwilling or
unable to do so, that responsibility must be borne by the broader community of states.
Through our actions on September 17th, we will show the Canadian government that Canadians
want to keep our r2p promise to protect innocent people from suffering. We commend the funds
the Canadian government has committed for humanitarian aid to the region, but money is not
enough to stop the conflict. Canada needs to show a more committed and concerted effort
to restore peace to the region. Specifically, the Canadian government must do all it can to assist
in the expeditious and full deployment to Darfur of the joint African Union and un hybrid
peacekeeping force, and to assist in its effectiveness. |
Day for Darfur 4 Event in Vancouver, BC
Room 1700, SFU Down Vancouver
515 W. Hastings St. Vancouver

3-5pm
|
|
Dear Members, Friends, and Supporters,
Please advise us at info@csfdarfur.net if you plan to hold an event as part of the coming Global Day for Darfur 4 as outlined below. Send us details to post on our website.
In Vancouver CSFDarfur chapters will screen Darfur Diaries, and will collect signed petitions as part of action for the September 16 DAY for Darfur 4. If you will like to screen Darfur Diaries, we could loan you a DVD copy.
The film presents the Darfurians the filmmakers met (refugees and displaced peoples, civilians and fighters resisting the Sudanese government, child soldiers, teachers, students, parents, children and community leaders) as a people with full lives, culture, and heritage, people with homes that they desperately want to return back to, people undergoing traumatic loss but who demonstrate inspiring strength and resilience, and people whose lives, homes, safety and rights deserve to be protected vigilantly as a fundamental human right. See more at http://www.darfurdiaries.org Sponsored by SFSS Advocacy Committee and CSFDarfur.
Clement Apaak, SFU Board of governor, Former SFSS president, and founder of CSFDarfur will be available for Q&A after the screening.
Messages for Global Day for Darfur (D4D)- 16 September 2007.
1 Overarching slogan for the D4D.
Don't look away - Protect the People of Darfur.
2 Key messages.
This September, 192 world leaders will meet at the United Nations General Assembly. This September UN member states must.
Demand that the Sudanese government, armed groups and Janjawid militia in Darfur and eastern Chad halt attacks against civilians and humanitarian agencies.
Ensure and commit to the expeditious and full deployment to Darfur of the joint African Union (AU) and United Nations hybrid peacekeeping force, and ensure that the government of Sudan facilitates the swift and unimpeded deployment.
In September 2005 world leaders made an historic commitment at the UN General Assembly World Summit to acknowledge their responsibility to protect their citizens, and a joint commitment to act if a government is unwilling to fulfill this primary responsibility through the UN. This commitment was termed the 'Responsibility to Protect' (R2P).
Despite the adoption of the Responsibility to Protect, the Sudanese government and the international community have failed to protect the people of Darfur.
Two years on, the people of Darfur continue to experience widespread human rights abuses and violations of international humanitarian law. An extra million people require assistance, another half million have been driven from their homes, and thousands more have lost their lives. The conflict in Darfur has spread beyond Sudan’s borders, affecting hundreds of thousands of civilians in eastern Chad.
This September, our leaders must speak out as one and show their commitment to protect the people of Darfur and eastern Chad.
2.1. Background to messaging on ending attacks and the AU-UN hybrid peacekeeping force
The priority of the international community must be to address the escalating protection needs of civilians in Darfur, at a time when attacks on civilians continue, and the operating environment for humanitarian agencies to reach those in need is at its lowest point since mid 2004. The situation has deteriorated since the Darfur Peace Agreement (DPA) of 5 May 2006. All parties to the conflict bear some responsibility for the increasing deterioration of security, and must comply with human rights and international humanitarian law.
The AU and the UN must continue to work closely and swiftly to deploy the AU-UN hybrid peacekeeping force. UN member states must support a prompt and sufficient deployment of the hybrid force by generating the necessary military, police and civilian personnel, as well as essential financial and material resources. Pending the full deployment of the hybrid force, UN member states must promptly provide AMIS (African Union Mission in the Sudan) with the necessary financial, material, logistical and human resources to allow for a strengthened and effective presence to halt the immediate and continuing widespread human rights abuses and violations of international humanitarian law.
AMIS is at present the only peacekeeping force on the ground in Darfur with a mandate to protect civilians, therefore full implementation of the UN support package to AMIS should be completed with great urgency. Presently the AU force remains unable to protect civilians. It is under-funded, under-supported and itself an increasing target for attack. If the commitment to protect civilians is to mean anything, then UN member state donors, the UN and the AU must work together to provide sufficient support to AMIS under its current structure as well as commit to longer-term protection measures.
2.2. Background to the concept of the 'Responsibility to Protect'.
On 17 September 2005 at the UN World Summit, world leaders agreed, for the first time, that states have a primary responsibility to protect their own populations and that the international community has a responsibility to act when these governments fail to protect the most vulnerable. The Responsibility to Protect or R2P international doctrine pledges "to take collective action… if national authorities manifestly fail to protect their population from genocide, war crimes, ethnic cleansing and crimes against humanity". This was a crucial step in building international agreement that sovereignty brings responsibility; that governments must not leave their own citizens unprotected from the worst atrocities committed by mankind; and that the rest of the world must not turn a blind eye but collectively take action to protect civilians where their government fails to do so under the mandate of the UN.

In the mean time, find your MP here to urge the Canadian government to:
1. End the violence in Darfur and implement a robust-international protection force
2. Condemn the Government of Sudan for its flagrant disregard of past agreements
3. Condemn the Government of Sudan for failing to take seriously the recent ICC
naming of two Sudanese suspects for war crimes and crimes against humanity
4. Significantly increase funding for Darfuri refugees and urge other countries to do the same.
Write to your MP and after 3 days when they don't respond, send a follow up, and keep following up until you hear back from their office. It's time to make our voices heard. |

Rape of Darfur Action: Individuals and Organisations
World Wide
Global
December 10, 2006
|
|
To Individuals and Organisations
In September this year we organised the Global Day for Darfur with events in over forty countries around the world to draw attention to the Darfur crisis.Although that day increased the awareness of the issue, the killing on the ground has continued unabated. The massive level of rape and sexual violence has also continued.
To keep the crisis in the public eye and to push for concerted international action to stop the crimes that are taking place, we are now working with organistions around the world to once again draw attention to the suffering.
On December 10th 2006 -Human Rights Day - groups around the world will be highlighting the issue of rape in Darfur.
Rape and sexual assault has become commonplace in the conflict with this form of violence increasingly being used as a weapon of terror. According to the U.N., in one refugee camp alone (Kalma Camp) in recent months the levels of sexual assault increased from around ten a month to ten assaults per day.
Collecting firewood has become a question of life and death for Darfuris: If men go to find firewood and are caught they are killed; if women are caught they are raped. Families are having to make the impossible choice day after day of who will have to take on this dangerous task.
On 10th December, thousands of women will demonstrate outside Sudanese embassies around the world, showing their solidarity with the women of Darfur. Where possible they will gather around fires - symbolising the firewood problem that makes so many women victims of rape in Darfur. Where possibly, people participating in the events will wear black to symbolize mourning.
To have maximum impact we are working to organise events in as many capitals as possible and would be very keen to work with you on this. Whether you are able to organise your own event or just support others, your support could make a real difference in drawing attention to what is happening and what the international community can do about it.
CSFDarfur chapters can arrange their own events or join with sister gruops in their schools, towns and cities to arrange events. Please let us know if your organisation will like to partner with CSFDarfur in Vancouver to hold and event. In Vancouver, CSFD is is holding an indoor vigil in Room 1700, SFU Down Vancouver.

Global Day For Darfur (Vancouver version)
Vancouver Art Gallery
750 Hornby Street, Vancouver, BC
Sunday Sept. 17th, 2006
2:00PM - 5:00PM
|
|
Confirmed Keynote speaker: Senator Mobina Jaffer, former Canada Peace Envoy to Sudan>
On September 17 2006, campaigners will hold the biggest campaigning day for Darfur since the start of the conflict. Thousands of people in dozens of cities will call on their governments to do more to protect civilians in Darfur.
September 17th marks the one-year anniversary of the United Nations' pledge to provide security for civilians around the world. People all over the world will gather to remind the UN of its unfulfilled responsibility and the continuing suffering in Darfur.
"From Abuja, to New York, this will be a chance for people across the globe to show that they care about Darfur," said Jill Savitt, Campaign Director of Human Rights First, one of the organizations coordinating the events. "September 17 is going to be a day of international solidarity to bring hope to the people of Darfur."
In New York, London, Paris, Abuja, Toronto, Vancouver, Cairo, Kigali, Moscow, and many other cities, events ranging from small candlelight vigils to mass concerts will bring citizens together to urge their governments to pressure the UN Security Council into taking immediate action to protect the people of Darfur as it promised.
Participants in the September 17 events will wear "blue hats," the internationally recognized icon of UN peacekeeping forces.
"The African Union has been struggling to do its job in Darfur. The UN must deploy peacekeepers as soon as possible with a strong mandate to protect civilians" said Dismas Nkunda a spokesperson for the Darfur Consortium, a coalition of more than thirty Africa-based and Africa-focused organizations.
The "Responsibility to Protect" (R2P), passed the UN General Assembly in 2005, but has yet to be implemented. The R2P pledges to "take collective action...if national authorities manifestly fail to protect their populations from genocide, war crimes, ethnic cleansing and crimes against humanity."
"Tens of thousands of people in capital cities from around the world will be calling again for the killings to stop." said Dr. James Smith, Executive Director of the Aegis Trust. "We are indignant at Darfur's slow death; its time for us to express our outrage."
Go to www.DayForDarfur.org to find out more about the range of international groups involved.
Contact info@csfdarfur.net or call 778-895-9242 or 604-291-4695 if you or your organisation in the Vancouver area will like to partner or help organise the Global Day of Action For Darfur.

|
Please help us make Darfur an election issue. As the parliamentary debates are hitting the table, it is your turn to speak up! Please visit www.avotefordarfur.org where you can participate in order to make Darfur an
election issue for your candidates to consider:
Dear Concerned Canadian,
The crisis in Darfur, Sudan has been called the "worst humanitarian crisis in the world" by the United Nations. Since February 2003, 400,000 people have died and 2.5 million are currently displaced due to the aggression and
crimes of the government of Sudan and janjaweed militias. The Canadian government has the ability to make a difference for the people of Darfur, but it has not yet felt the public pressure to do so. As Canada heads to the
polls, candidates should know that there will be political consequences for inaction.
Please join Canada, Canadian Students for Darfur, STAND (Students Taking Action Now: Darfur), the Genocide Intervention Network, STAND US, and many others in ensuring that Darfur stays on the radar screen of all candidates this election.
Here's what you can do:
1. Complete our short ONLINE SURVEY. Your responses will be presented to candidates in ridings across the country, demonstrating to Canada's political leaders that their constituents do care about Darfur, and that their inaction will come at a price.
2. Check out the CANDIDATE REPORT CARD. STAND Canada has sent your candidates a survey regarding their position on the issue of Darfur. We will post their responses on our website as they arrive so that you can make an informed decision on Election Day. Check the site before January 23 to see what your candidates said. STAND encourages you to visit avotefordarfur.org and to forward this link to family, friends, and co-workers to help give this issue the attention it deserves. |

Hotel Rwanda: A lesson yet to be learned
The Chan Centre for the Performing Arts, UBC
Sunday, January 8, 2006
|
|
When Rwanda descended into madness, Rusesabagina took action. A fastidious, crafty, and yet highly principled businessman, he resorted to desperate tactics. While militants threatened and surrounded the well-groomed grounds of the hotel, he spent hours on the phone, pleading with influential leaders, his international connections his only defense against attack. He bartered luxury items such as mon! ey, gold, cigars, and aged bottles of wine he hoarded in his hotel, for the lives of strangers seeking refuge in the chaos. Miraculously, no one who housed at his hotel died.
As the world turned its back on the horrific tragedy, Rusesabagina was one man who saved few among the many lost. Now, through emotionally stirring words, he shares his story first-hand, in hopes that future events of this type can be prevented. “I hope this will be a wake-up call, not only for Rwanda but the whole international community,” he said.
Rusesabagina will be speaking at The Chan Centre for the Performing Arts at the University of British Columbia on Sunday, January 8th at 8pm. The event is being sponsored by Hillel Vancouver, National Jewish Campus Life, the Alma Mater Society of the University of British Columbia and The Chan Centre. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster at www.ticketmaster.com or 604.280.3311.

International Solidarity Fast For Darfur
Global
Global
Thursday October 6th, 2005
|
|
The emergency in Sudan’s western region of Darfur presents the gravest
challenge to the world since the Rwandan genocide in 1994. The humanitarian, security, and political situation continues to deteriorate: atrocities continue, people are still dying in large numbers from malnutrition and disease, and a new famine is feared.
On October 6th, 2005, CSFDARFUR and STAND (Students Taking Action Now: Darfur), in cooperation with other organizations worldwide, will be holding a Solidarity Fast for Darfur. On this day, we ask individuals to abstain from a meal or luxury good and donate the money saved to relief efforts in Darfur. Darfur Fund has been set-up with Scotia Bank of Canada. The fund is a public fund, open to the public for donation to Darfur: account #: 0002119 transit #: 50450
If you want to help make this campaign successful, click
here for a list of things you can do to and send an email to officers@csfdarfur.net.
The goal of the fast is to send a powerful message that we, the international community, recognize our responsibility to protect the world's populations from humanitarian crises.
While the International Solidarity Fast for Darfur will demonstrate the
international community’s willingness to resolve the crisis in Darfur, the ability to do so remains in the hands of the world’s governments. According
to the principle of Responsibility to Protect, established by the International
Committee on Intervention and State Sovereignty, sovereign states have a
responsibility to protect their own citizens from avoidable catastrophe- from
mass murder and rape, from starvation- but that when they are unwilling or
unable to do so, that responsibility must be borne by the broader community of
states. Thus, CSFDarfur and STAND Canada are rallying support from individuals and organizations alike to urge all nations to recognize their responsibility to protect and take the necessary actions to resolve the security crisis. For this purpose, we ask that you host a camp-out on your respective campuses, and encourage Canadians to sign postcards to be delivered to the Prime Minister of Canada.
On October 6th, remind the world that it is our responsibility to protect innocents in Darfur by participating in…
…the FAST to send aid
…the BRACELET to raise awareness
…the POSTCARD to demand action |

Come and hear Vancouver religious leaders, from all faiths, talk about the need to be compassionate and to help people in need. Victims of the Darfur conflict are in need and we must help them as all the holy books mandate us to.
The emergency in Darfur presents the gravest challenge to the world since the Rwandan genocide in 1994. The humanitarian, security, and political situation continues to deteriorate: atrocities continue, people are still dying in large numbers from malnutrition and disease, and a new famine is feared.
On October 6th, 2005, CSFDARFUR in cooperation with other organizations worldwide, will be holding a Solidarity Fast for Darfur. The fund is a public fund, open to the public for donation to Darfur: account #: 0002119 transit #: 50450.
The goal of this event is let the world know that we are united in recognizing our responsibility to protect the world's populations from humanitarian crises.
We want to show that people from all faiths condemn mass murder and rape, and are willing to prevent fellow humans from starving. If you cannot make it to this event, we ask that you host an event on your respective campuses, and encourage Canadians to sign postcards to be delivered to the Prime Minister of Canada. Contact us at info@csfdarfur.net if you need postcards and other material.
